Auto-Generating Contracts on Rental Creation
Once your contract template is solid, the next step is to take your hands off the wheel. Auto-generation means every new rental immediately produces a contract draft — and optionally sends it — with zero manual steps.
Turning it on
Go to Settings > Contracts and look for the Automation section. Flip Auto-generate on rental creation to on. You will see a small form appear with a few related settings.
What it does
Once enabled, here is the flow the moment a rental is created (whether you create it in the console, a renter books through your widget or website, or the AI agent takes a booking):
- The rental is created (it starts in the Upcoming status).
- A contract is generated using your default template.
- All merge tags are filled in from the rental data.
- The contract is created as a Draft.
At this point, without any further setup, you have a contract ready to review. If you also enable Auto-send, the contract immediately goes out for signature using the signatory email on the rental.
Auto-send
Flip Auto-send to renter on and the signing link is emailed to the renter the moment the contract is generated. Auto-send requires Auto-generate to be on — you cannot send a contract that was never drafted. The signing link goes to the renter's email on the rental. You can still override the recipient per-contract if you send one manually.
Reminder days
Below auto-send is a Reminder days field. This is the cadence for nudging unsigned contracts: set it to 2, and if a contract is still unsigned 2 days after sending, a reminder goes out automatically. Set it to 0 to disable reminders.
Reminders stop as soon as the contract is signed, declined, or the rental's pickup date passes.
Block pickup if unsigned
The biggest safety feature of auto-generation is the Block pickup if unsigned toggle. When it is on:
- The rental is flagged in red on your calendar and dashboard on the morning of pickup.
- If you use smart-lock access codes or digital pickup flows, the access code is suppressed until the contract is signed.
- The renter sees a small notice on their rental portal: "Your contract must be signed before pickup."
This single setting saves you from handing a trailer to a renter who somehow made it to pickup without signing — a scenario with real legal and insurance exposure.
What happens to manual flows
Auto-generation does not disable manual contract creation. You can still go to any rental's Contract tab, click New Contract, pick a non-default template, and send it manually. The automation only handles the happy path where you want the default treatment — your exceptions still get your attention. Auto-generation also skips any rental that already has a contract, so it never creates a duplicate.
A good rollout
Turn on auto-generation first, without auto-send. Watch a dozen contracts get created and review them to be sure the template and merge tags look right. Then turn on auto-send once you trust it. Finally, turn on Block pickup if unsigned as the safety net.
