Pair a tracker to a trailer
Pairing takes about a minute per device. PassTime trackers pair by serial number; other trackers connect over the webhook.
Pairing a PassTime tracker
- Open GPS Tracking from the left sidebar.
- Click Pair PassTime.
- Enter the serial number printed on the tracker.
- Choose the trailer this tracker belongs to — a trailer is required. If that trailer already has a VIN on file, it fills in automatically.
- Enter the trailer's VIN — a full 17 characters is required to register the tracker with PassTime.
- Optionally add a friendly name like "Dual-Axle #3".
- Click Pair device.
TrailerBase registers the device on your PassTime account, links it to the trailer you chose, and adds it to your device list. A tracker that is already on your PassTime account pairs just fine. If registration with PassTime fails, the pair does not go through — you'll see an error instead of a half-finished device, so correct the serial or VIN and try again.
What the trailer link does
Because you choose the trailer while pairing, the tracker is linked from the moment it's added — the trailer's name shows on its map marker, and the trailer's rental status travels with the device.
Don't have trackers yet?
Order PassTime trackers through the TrailerBase order portal — the "Order trackers" link on the GPS Tracking page. They arrive ready to pair by serial number.
Connecting a different tracker (webhook)
For Trak-4 and other webhook-capable devices:
- Click Connect Device on the GPS Tracking page and follow the wizard.
- Configure the tracker (in its own app or firmware) to push its position updates to TrailerBase.
- The device's location appears once the tracker pushes its first update — webhook devices report on their schedule, not the 30-minute PassTime cadence.
Replacing a tracker
To swap the hardware on a trailer, disconnect the old device (that removes it from your fleet map), then pair the replacement tracker to that trailer — entering its serial and 17-character VIN just like any new pairing.
Troubleshooting
- "Waiting for first check-in" for more than an hour? Battery-saver trackers sleep between reports — try Locate now, and confirm the device is charged and outdoors.
- Mistyped serial? A wrong serial never matches the tracker's reports. Remove the device and pair again with the correct serial.
