Access Code Security

Access codes are the digital keys to your fleet. TrailerBase is designed so that those keys are strong by default, tightly scoped, easy to revoke, and fully audited. Here is exactly what you get, and what you can tune.

Code Length and Randomness

Every generated code is a random 6 to 8 digit number. The exact length depends on the capabilities of the paired lock — igloohome padlocks use 7 digits, for example, while some August devices support up to 8. You cannot choose a code yourself; this prevents you from accidentally picking weak codes like birthdays or obvious sequences.

Under the hood, the codes come from a cryptographically secure random number generator, not a shuffled list. There is no pattern between your codes and no way to predict the next one from a previous one.

One-Time Default, or a Use Window

Each code is created in one of two modes:

• One-time (default) — Works once to unlock. After the first successful unlock, the lock stores the state as "rental in progress" and the code will only work again to relock at the end of the reservation. This is the safest option and the default for standard rentals.
• Use window — Works an unlimited number of times within the scheduled window. Best for multi-day rentals where the renter may need to open the trailer multiple times.

You can switch between modes on any reservation before the renter has unlocked the trailer.

Emergency Revoke

Anything can happen. A renter might disappear with the trailer, a phone might get stolen, or a code might leak. TrailerBase gives you a single-click Emergency Revoke button on any trailer.

When you hit it, TrailerBase instantly:

• Revokes every active code on every lock assigned to that trailer
• Pushes the revocation to all connected locks immediately
• Notifies you by email and SMS once the revoke is confirmed on every device
• Logs the event with a timestamp and the user who triggered it

You can then issue a new code, or lock the trailer out entirely until you investigate.

The Master Code

Every lock has a master code that only you — the account owner — can see. It does not expire with reservations, and it does not appear in your renters' email. It is intended for emergencies: a locked-out renter at 3 AM, a lost device, a firmware glitch.

Master codes are visible only in Settings > Security > Master Codes, and viewing one is itself an audit event. Team members at lower permission levels cannot see master codes.

The Audit Log

Every code event — creation, delivery, unlock attempt, successful unlock, revocation — is written to an immutable audit log. You can export it for any date range in Settings. If you ever need to prove who had access to what and when, it is all there.

Combined, these features keep your fleet secure and give you a clear answer to any access question.
