Smart Locks Overview

TrailerBase smart lock support turns every rental into a contactless, self-serve pickup. You never have to meet the renter in person to hand over a key, and you never have to chase anyone down to return one. The lock does the work for you.

How a Contactless Rental Works

When a reservation is created, TrailerBase automatically generates a unique access code for the assigned trailer's smart lock. You decide when that code is delivered to the renter — immediately, a set number of hours before pickup, or on demand. The code is valid only for that reservation's window, and it expires the moment the return time passes.

A typical flow looks like this:

1. Renter books a trailer through your website, the dashboard, or a manually created reservation.
2. TrailerBase provisions a unique 6-8 digit code on the paired smart lock.
3. The code is delivered to the renter via email and SMS before pickup.
4. Renter drives up, enters the code, and takes the trailer.
5. On return, the renter re-locks the trailer and the code deactivates automatically.

You see every code event in the audit log, so you always know who unlocked what and when.

Supported Hardware

You can pair any of the following providers to TrailerBase:

• igloohome — Offline-capable Bluetooth padlocks and deadbolts. Great for yards without Wi-Fi.
• Master Lock Vault Enterprise — Rugged padlocks designed for outdoor and fleet use.
• August — Smart deadbolts for enclosed trailers with a rear door.

You can mix and match providers across your fleet. TrailerBase normalizes each provider's quirks so you manage everything from one screen.

Where the Lock Goes

For most rentals, you will attach a smart padlock directly to the trailer's coupler, blocking anyone from hitching up without the code. For enclosed cargo trailers, you can also mount a lock on the rear door. Some operators use both — one on the coupler and one on the door — and TrailerBase supports multiple locks per trailer.

Getting Started

Head to Settings > Integrations > Smart Locks to connect your provider account, then pair your first device. Once the device is online, assign it to a trailer and you are ready to run your first contactless rental. If you get stuck pairing, check your device's battery and make sure it is within Bluetooth range of the hub or phone you are using during setup.
